You've heard of the phrases: "you snooze you lose", "the early bird gets the worm". Well, this applies also to creating wealth and succeeding in goals. Notice the correlation, how the majority of wealthy and powerful people all wake up really dumb early. I mean there's no sun out, WTF are you doing up kind of early? There are several advantages those people have when they jump up and out of bed at 5 AM. Here are 5 reasons:
1. Entering "the flow" state
The flow state can best be compared to when athletes are in "the zone". Coming out of Rem sleep sets the body and mind up to doing tasks with a clean state of mind with razor sharp focus. Like a clean chalkboard, the first thing that is written will be your only focus with no other distractions. Many "successful" people wake up early use this phenomenon to perform and complete high-level tasks that require focus and attention.
2. Removing Ego Depletion
The term Ego, in this situation, refers to the predisposition that our willpower is finite. We all understand we have limits to resist urges to do what we know we shouldn't be doing because of lack of willpower. Ego is like a battery. Its job is to resist temptation, aggression, filter distractions, suppress emotions as well as trying to look good in front of others. Well stressors throughout the day, whether it be from work, relationships, family, or even just fatigue from being awake depletes your Ego. Going to sleep revitalizes your Ego and willpower. Waking up early and tackling tasks as early as possible while your Ego Reserves are high translates to vastly more productivity than later on in the day because of ego depletion.
3. Time for a morning ritual
Morning rituals are personalized to you and the earlier people wake up, the more time people can fully realize its potential and take control of the trajectory they want their day's direction to go. This does not happen for the snoozers because once they finally do crawl out of bed, often they are rushing to catch up on "time lost"(sleeping), be it heading to school or work.
Morning rituals can include meditating, exercising, eating a healthy breakfast and beginning work on important tasks, it is a "habit creator" because the rituals are done every day. Habits shape us because it assimilates into our subconscious mind. Successful people perform morning rituals that build upon traits that make them healthier, happier and wealthy-er".
4. Mental and physical isolation
Isolation is a powerful tool. Getting up at 5 AM is the sweet spot for most people so they can maximize their daily length from (pre)sunrise to sunset. This gives more time to simply think without being interrupted by the other variables in life aka other humans. Mental and physical isolation gives a person a moment to really ponder about what they actually want to ponder about without any exo-suggestion. So if you really wanted to put your mind to figuring out how to gain an edge in life and propel yourself and your financials to new heights, best to do it when your not in the car with radio commercials blasting your conscious and subconscious mind every 2 minutes, or with Frank breathing his morning breathe in your face as he complains about being broke at the office.
5. Accomplishment breeds more accomplishment
Those who wake up early generally get more done in a day due to the obvious advantage of having more time in the day. However, there is another reason why people who succeed at getting up at 5 AM keeps rising up early, day after day. Its because completing the task is an accomplishment and a motivator. When they get up and get tasks done, 3 hours earlier before you even hit the snooze button. They know they are bad-ass. They know they are ahead in the game (of life). Pride can be a bad thing, but not in this case. That sense of pride you get from being in front of the pack, it is inevitable that your ego swells. It convinces you that you are successful and get sh*t done, it breeds positivity and productivity. Creating a snowball effect of action, action towards your goals and dreams. Steve Jobs was bad-ass when it came to innovation and productivity, you know what else he was. He was a real pretentious jerk. His ego was through the roof, maybe even the planet. We can assume that mindset and personality was caused possibly because of his morning ritual. He gave off that air about him like he was better than the rest of us, but with his success, I personally don't fault him. His accomplishments continued until the day he passed, heck, his influence still carries on.
So as the saying goes....you snooze, you lose. So consider setting your alarm to 5 AM and start winning.
